About the centre

In December of 1968 a group of local men met informally to set up an organisation to improve the conditions of senior citizens. These men represented a broad section of the community and were the founder members of what is now the Grange Welfare Association (Charity No 25803).

Initially they provided popular bus trips during the summer for elders, purchased coal for poorer pensioners in the winter and raised funds to provide a meals on wheels van. They also opened a community centre at nearby Newburn as a drop in for pensioners.

In 1969 they passed a resolution to set aside money for the erection of a building to supply day care services for elders. After many years of hard work fundraising through monthly dances, a weekly lottery and an annual Gala Week, their goal was realised and in October 1975 the Grange Centre was opened. The building has since been extended on four separate occasions and has disabled access to all areas.

Many of our existing members / users were very much a part of this fundraising. They bought bricks for the building, which has instilled in them a real sense of ownership, which we still continue.

The Centre is very much a part of the local community, the building hosts the Grange Welfare Private Members Club popularised by a wide spectrum of the community over 18 years of age. Day Care for elderly is provided from Monday to Friday 52 weeks of the year excluding public bank holidays. Meals on Wheels are provided Monday to Friday with the exception of public bank holidays. The building is a hive of activity seven days a week. Rooms are also available for private hire.
